Bears fire head coach Matt Eberflus

The Chicago Bears have decided to move in another direction by firing head coach Matt Eberflus amid the team’s six-game skid.

The decision came just one day after the Bears suffered a 23-20 road loss to the Detroit Lions. The Bears mounted a serious second-half comeback but fell short in the final seconds of regulation due to clock mismanagement.

“This morning, after meeting with [chairman George H. McCaskey] and [president and CEO Kevin Warren], we informed Matt of our decision to move in a different direction with the leadership of our football team and the head-coaching position,” Bears general manager Ryan Poles said in a statement released Friday afternoon via ESPN. “I thank Matt for his hard work, professionalism and dedication to our organization. We extend our gratitude for his commitment to the Chicago Bears and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”

The Bears experienced a promising start to the 2024 season, holding a 4-2 record, but have dropped their last six consecutive games have pushed them almost entirely out of the playoff race.

All that led to much scrutiny around their offensive woes, particularly the playcalling and the connection between Eberflus and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

The internal issues became apparent during and after the late-game clock mismanagement flub against the Lions. Eberflus voiced that he handled the situation properly while there was clear disgruntlement among several players in their postgame interviews.

The Bears are moving forward with Thomas Brown, the interim offensive coordinator, as the team’s interim head coach for this week’s matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
