Bill Belichick explains why Patriots cut WR Mohamed Sanu

The New England Patriots are in a transitional period with no telling how things may turn out for the storied franchise during the 2020 NFL season. Along with Tom Brady now suiting up for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Patriots have decided to part ways with veteran wide receiver Mohamed Sanu.

With the release of Sanu being a surprise, to say the least, Belichick tried to explain the Patriots’ reasoning in parting ways with Sanu. The future Hall of Fame head coach chalked it up to the simple fact that things didn’t work out between the two sides, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

“Just one of those things that didn’t work out,” coach Bill Belichick told reporters on Friday. “I have a lot of respect for Mo, but ultimately things just didn’t work out. I think he tried very hard, I think we tried hard, I don’t think it was anybody’s fault or anything like that. It was just one of those situations that just didn’t work out as well as everyone hoped it would have when the transaction was made. As always, we will try to make the decisions that are best for the football team, whether that’s bringing a person in or releasing a player. Obviously it can go both ways. At this point in time, we felt like that’s best for the team. Last year we felt differently. We’re in a little different situation this year.”

Sanu was brought in by the Patriots last season to bolster the receiving corps with a veteran presence that was sorely needed to join Julian Edelman. Unfortunately, he struggled to make an impact in New England and never lived up to expectations after coming over from the Atlanta Falcons.

In eight games with the Patriots, Sanu caught 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown. Things didn’t improve for the veteran wideout in the playoffs as he caught one pass for 11 yards in the loss to the Tennessee Titans.
