Bills shockingly part ways with head coach Sean McDermott

After nine seasons, the Buffalo Bills parted ways with head coach Sean McDermott on Monday.

The decision comes following the Bills falling short in a 33-30 overtime loss to the top-seeded Denver Broncos.

“Sean has done an admirable job of leading our football team for the past 9 seasons,” owner Terry Pegula said in a statement via ESPN. “But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe that to our players and to Bills Mafia.”

It ends a strong run in Buffalo for McDermott, who finished with a 98-50 record along with an 8-8 mark in the playoffs, which features two AFC championship game losses to the Kansas City Chiefs.

He helped guide the franchise to five straight AFC East division titles, with that streak snapping this season after finishing second with a 12-5 record behind the New England Patriots.

“For nearly a decade I have had the opportunity to wake up every morning as the Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills, which has truly been a gift,” McDermott said. “… I am proud and humbled to have worked alongside amazing staff and players as we shared life together and poured out our hearts and souls into both winning football games and making a positive impact in our community.”

The Bills remained a powerhouse in the AFC under McDermott, but struggled to break through toward reaching the Super Bowl. The hope was that this season could be that opportunity, especially with Mahomes and the Chiefs out of the playoff picture, but that didn’t come to fruition.
