Patriots owner Robert Kraft admits they may need to draft a QB
Superstar quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots is a freak of nature. The five-time Super Bowl champion is still going strong at 40 years old. Although, he can’t play forever and the storied franchise needs to start thinking about his successor under center.
Ironically enough, the team traded the ideal candidate to replace Brady in Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers. That move was a questionable one. It may ultimately come back to bite them as they need a viable backup at the position. Owner Robert Kraft admits that the team needs to look to the draft to bring in another quarterback, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
“I’m going to put my fan hat on, and obviously at some point we have to,” owner Robert Kraft said, when asked if finding a quarterback in the draft is a high priority for the team. “Not just that, but think what happened in the ’08 season when in the first quarter against Kansas City, Tom [Brady] goes out. How many people would have said that Matt Cassel would have led us to an 11-5 season? I put my faith and confidence in Bill [Belichick]. He knows his responsibilities. Anything can happen, even if Tom comes in [and is in] tip-top shape.”
Super Bowl Futures
At this point, there’s no telling when Brady may call it a career. He’s been able to stay relatively healthy throughout the majority of his time with the Patriots. However, Father Time is undefeated and can strike at any moment with the team needing to be prepared for that.
Although the backup quarterback situation is an area of need for the perennial Super Bowl title contender, the team is expected to be a serious threat to win it all once again next season. New England will continue to be a contender until Brady starts to show signs of slowing down. Or, until head coach Bill Belichick decides to leave or becomes not as sharp as he used to be.
