Seahawks GM admits team was ‘panicked’ about Sam Darnold injury

Days before the Seattle Seahawks’ divisional matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, quarterback Sam Darnold had suffered an oblique injury.

The injury raised significant concern within the organization, but Darnold hasn’t flinched in his performance since. General manager John Schneider voiced on Thursday that the 28-year-old hasn’t wavered about the situation throughout the playoffs.

“I think we were all more panicked in what was going on than he was,” Schneider said via ESPN. “He was kind of looking at us like we had three heads, like, ‘What’s everybody so worried about?’ He’s like, ‘I’ll be good.'”

Darnold has been a bright spot offensively in the Seahawks’ push to the Super Bowl. He stepped up in the Divisional Round, completing 12-of-17 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in the lopsided 41-6 win over the San Francisco 49ers that didn’t need much from him.

He took it up a notch in the NFC Championship game, putting forth a game-changing performance by completing 25-of-36 passes for 346 yards with three touchdowns and holding a 127.8 passer rating.

In two games, he has passed for 470 yards with a 69.8 completion rate and holds a 122.4 passer rating. Darnold has been a bright spot, and the Seahawks will lean on him in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots.

The Seahawks possess arguably the best defense in the league, but it has been Darnold’s steady play that has helped push them toward a deep playoff run with a chance to capture the franchise’s second Super Bowl trophy.
