Trey Lance faces critical season with 49ers

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance desperately needs to solidify his status going forward this season.

It’s time for Trey Lance to make his move.

Entering his third NFL season with the 49ers, Lance is still trying to earn the starting job under center. As a rookie, Lance watched as Jimmy Garoppolo led the Niners to the NFC Championship Game. This past season, Lance began as the starter but then broke his ankle in Week 2, ending his campaign. While Lance sat on the sidelines and recovered, seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy took over and also led San Francisco to Championship Weekend.

Now, with Purdy looking at a lengthy rehabilitation with a torn UCL in his right elbow, Lance has an opening to regain the job and never hand it back.

However, the early headlines around Lance this offseason have stemmed from his relationship with Ran Carthon, who left San Francisco’s front office in January to become the general manager of the Tennessee Titans. After the hire was made, Lance Tok to Instagram and made the following post:

For some, this was a bizarre post, making many believe Lance wanted to get to Tennessee. However, the youngster says he was misunderstood, per the San Francisco Chronicle:

“Me and Ran got close. He’d bring his boys in, and I’d talk to his kids. For me, that was huge. It was like a shining light. Just getting to know someone’s family like that. I was super happy for him. The fingers crossed emoji wasn’t like ‘cross my fingers emoji, I want to be a Tennessee Titan.’ I love it here. I don’t want to be anywhere else. That’s my No. 1 used emoji too.”

To this juncture, San Francisco general manager John Lynch gave up three first-round picks to acquire Lance, and the return has been four starts. That must change in a major way this season with real success beginning to play out, or there’s a real chance Lance gets his fifth-year option declined with Purdy given the main job moving forward.

Surrounded by one of the NFL’s best rosters, Lance will have an opportunity to prove himself through OTAs and minicamp before training camp sets sail in July. Then, it’s Lance and Purdy battling for the top spot in the most-anticipated quarterback battle of 2023.
