NFL Week 8 schedule: 5 best bets on underdogs

We take a hard look at the NFL Week 8 schedule and pick which underdogs could either cover the spread or outright win.

5. Detroit Lions (+3.5) vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Lions are 0-7, but they’ve been hanging tough throughout the season. In fact, they’ve lost a few games on last-second field goals and if it happens again, the Eagles win but don’t cover the spread. For the Lions, this is a rare contest where they can legitimately get a victory, and do so in front of the home fans. Philadelphia has to take care of the ball, something that’s always risky with a second-year quarterback.

4. Washington Football Team (+3) at Denver Broncos

The Broncos have lost four consecutive games, and playing at home might be more of a burden than being on the road with fans turning against the current group. Washington isn’t good, but the offense has a few playmakers in receiver Terry McLaurin and running back Antonio Gibson. With Denver missing many starters, perhaps the Football Team can get a few scores and hold on against Teddy Bridgewater and the Broncos’ anemic third-down offense.

3. Tennessee Titans (+2.5) at Indianapolis Colts

The Titans were favorites earlier in the week, but. have now seen the line swing to where they’re getting 2.5 points. Indianapolis has won two straight, beating the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans and now come home trying to make the AFC South a much more exciting race. However, Tennessee has beaten the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs over the same stretch. Expect a really close game, so take the points.

2. Chicago Bears (+4) vs. San Francisco 49ers

Why are the Niners laying four points on the road against anybody? San Francisco is 2-4 and hasn’t won since Week 2, with the only victories coming against the 0-7 Lions and 2-5 Eagles. If the Niners are going to win, they’ll need to get quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo going against a good defense on the road. Chicago’s offense has been brutal, but to keep it within four points isn’t a huge ask.

1. New England Patriots (+4.5) at Los Angeles Chargers

The Patriots are one of the stranger teams in the league. They barely beat the Texans, and then almost beat the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now, they draw the Chargers, who are coming off a bye week. Last year, Patriots coach Bill Belichick stymied Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, shutting Los Angeles out by a 45-0 count. Don’t be surprised if another upset is in store.
